Welcome

Why don‘t you bring a potential new member with you to our upcoming Branch Report at the new National Convention Centre on 23 October 2007?

As part of this year’s branch report, we will be conducting an industry famil of the new NCC and hosting an information night for new members. It’s a great excuse to catch up with all of your MEA friends.

Included in our newsletter are details of two great speakers that have been lined up by your professional development committee. Each speaker has been selected for their ability to impart knowledge and help you to grow your skills and your business.

Since our last newsletter MEA ACT has accepted a seat on the Business Council’s Tourism Sports and Arts Taskforce and submissions have opened for the 2007 annual Meeting’s and Event’s Industry Awards.

Entries are also about to open for the MEA/Ungerboeck Systems International Young Professional Scholarship. The prize on offer is full conference registration to the National Conference in Alice Springs next May.

Once again, thank you to our sponsors for helping us deliver quality events to our membership time and time again.

regards

Dana Busic
MEA ACT Chair

Event Marketing in the e-Business World

By Doreen Culliver

You just have to be sorry if you missed the opportunity to attend the recent ACT Branch E-Marketing PD held at the CSIRO on Wednesday 13 June 2007. Twenty-two delegates braved the cold morning to attend and were afforded some very valuable tips on how to develop an effective e-marketing campaign. All delegates were very appreciative of the information received from the three guest presenters –

Nathan Jones – Zebra Interactive Solutions
Paul Martin – Amlink Technologies
Nikki Little – Novotel Brighton Beach

Zebra also offered a free website appraisal to those that had come along. Thank you also to the CSIRO who hosted the morning session in the Optus Lecture Theatre. The breakfast was just great, warming us all up on arrival.

60 seconds with new MEA Committee Member Mark Huck, Director of Sales – The Brassey of Canberra

1. How long have you lived and worked in Canberra, and what prompted the decision to move to the Nation’s Capital?

I have been here about 19 months and firstly as the Director of Sales and Marketing for Novotel Canberra before moving to The Brassey of Canberra.

2. Please tell us a little about The Brassey of Canberra and why you are enjoying the role.

It is a wonderful, unique hotel that is heritage listed situated on two and a half acres. We turn 80 this year.

3. You’ve been in the industry for some time – do you think it’s changed much over the years and if so, in what ways?

The change has been enormous. When I first started in the tourism industry you wrote airline tickets by hand and looked up airline schedules in a directory call the ABC. Hotel chains have ventured into Australia in a huge way and still growing. Internet has changed the industry and is still changing and developing.

4. We understand that you are involved in several networking groups and organisations in Canberra. What are some of these organisations and how do you manage to find the time to keep actively involved with so many things?

I am involved in the MEA, Australian American Association, SKAL, Schmooze, Australian British Society, and a member of many other Associations and Nation Icons.

5. What motivated you to join the MEA ACT committee, and what do you see yourself focusing on over the next 12 months?

Being new to MEA I will listen and learn how we involve ourselves in the business events community. I hope we can help to make Canberra the most professional conference city in Australia.

6. What do you like doing when you have a bit of ‘down time’?

Tennis and golf. Before I came to Canberra I used to Event (horse riding cross country, show jumping and dressage) over 1 or 3 days. However that has taken a back step, and I like to travel.

7. Please share with our members and readers a few of your local favourites (a) best coffee in town; (b) favourite restaurant; (c) favourite watering hole; and (d) your chill-out place

I like to try different places. As most people in Canberra I head for Manuka or Kingston. Also Dickson for Yum Cha or out into the county areas to the local cafes and restaurants.

8. Last question – you are hosting the ultimate dinner party for five (5) people, including yourself. Who would your guests be (you can choose anyone), and what would you cook?

I would do the traditional Roast. I would invite Madeleine Albright, Tiger Woods, Margaret Court, Nelson Mandela and my nephew Robert Huck.
